Healing with sound and vibration

What is sound therapy?

“Sound therapy or vibrational medicine is classed as a complimentary health approach that uses specific tones, frequencies and rhythms to promote physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.”

The practice is rooted in the principle that everything in the universe, including the human body, is in a constant state of vibration and imbalances can be harmonized with resonant frequencies. Ancient wisdom and modern day practices suggest that what we perceive as solid matter is actually energy vibrating at slower speeds. When external sounds match the natural frequencies of our cells and tissues, the body enters a state of resonance, which is believed to facilitate healing.

Resonance & entrainment

The body’s systems, including brainwaves and our heart rate and breathing, can synchronise with external rhythmic frequencies in a process called entrainment. Findings cited from the HeartMath Institute and other sources say that the heart's electromagnetic field extends several feet around the body and that this field can affect another person's brainwaves at a distance of up to 15 feet. Heart entrainment (coherence) occurs when a person is in a state of positive emotion, allowing their heart rhythm to sync with and influence others in the same space. This explanation can help to understand why you might feel better, calmer or more positive around certain individuals and/or have a negative, nervous or anxious experience around others. When it comes to sound therapy it aims to shift brainwave patterns from a stressed active state (beta) to a more relaxed state (alpha, theta or delta) which in turn activates the bodies natural relaxation response.

Cellular impact

When we consider that the human body, largely made up of water, means it’s an excellent conductor for vibration, it makes it more feasible to understand how vibrations can penetrate deeply into tissues and muscles, essentially providing a form of cellular massage. This in turn helps to stimulate circulation, promotes cellular regeneration and release physical tension.

Nervous System Regulation

Specific sounds and vibrations can activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest) to reduce stress and promote a release of endorphins which helps the body to heal and restore balance.

Energy balance

Sound therapy can help with the flow of energy to support the body’s energy centers and channels and balance the body's life force energy (Qi/Chi). The practice moves from clearing blockages to circulating and finally anchoring energy. This can also help to elevate your frequency to a higher state of consciousness.

What you can expect from sound therapy

  • Relaxed Environment: This is really key and when done correctly can make a huge difference. Participants are invited to lie down and makes themselves as comfortable as possible. The venue should be in a warm, dimly lit room, without outside noise or distraction. Eye masks can be used to help you relax further.

  • Passive Experience: It is a gentle, non-invasive process where you simply listen as the practitioner plays instruments with varied rhythms and tones. I myself create more of a soundscape with pre-recorded sounds layered in the background to create a layering effect of sound. I like to include the elements, so sounds of wind, rain, the ocean, birds etc.

  • Sensations: You may feel a sense of being lighter, held or cocooned, and/or experience energy shifting through the body.

  • Reduced Stress and Anxiety: The sounds help lower cortisol levels and shift the body from a "fight or flight" state to a "rest and digest" parasympathetic state.

  • Deep Relaxation/Improved Sleep: Frequencies such as theta waves encourage deep relaxation and better sleep quality. This is why some people may experience falling asleep during a soundbath.

  • Emotional Release: You may experience releasing emotional blockages, deep mental chatter, and feeling a greater sense of calm.

  • Physical Benefits: Some experience relief from physical pain and lowered blood pressure.

  • Improved Cognition: It can help clear the mind, improving mental focus and memory.
